If you live in a country where the winter is harsh you will be very familiar with the hazardous conditions when driving. Snow and ice can lead to dangerous conditions especially for inexperienced drivers. Fitting tire chains to your vehicle will be a big help in these conditions.Before you purchase tire chains check with your vehicle manual to endure you buy the correct size and can be used safely on your vehicle. Next check the regulations in your country or state to ensure it is legal to use them. It’s a good idea to practise fitting your chains in warmer conditions. It’s a lot easier to practise in the driveway in the sunshine than on the side of the road in the snow because you drove into a snowstorm. carefully follow the instructions for fitting and tighten as much as possible by hand. Tires should be normally inflated, do not deflate to make fitting easier. Drive with the chains on all four tires for about a quater of a mile then stop and tighten again. Always drive below 30 miles an hour with tire chains fitted.

Types of Snow Chains

Cable chains are the most economical and recommended for front wheel drive vehicles. Theyt are lightweight with steel rollers for increased traction and provide the most clearance between the fenderwall and the tire. For vehicles with minimal clearance twist link chains are also an economical buy. For vehicles with good wheel well clearance highway chains, which are heavier and more durable, are recommended  Road King chains have a square link design and a Y patterned chain to give less vibration and noise and a more comfortable ride. Sno Grip chains are a good buy, with a square link design giving excellent traction for good stopping and cornering. For emergency or snow clearing vehicles with good wheel well clearance, V-bar chains are available.

These tire chains are meant for short distances only and may not be legal on highways where tire chain use is mandated. They provide excellent traction if you are stuck or in danger of being stuck. They are very easy to install and remove and are meant to rescue you in an emergency only. They are not designed for continous driving and can only be used with slotted wheels. It is recommended to use in pairs, one on each drive tire mounted oppositely.
